What Window Tint is Legal in Calgary, Alberta for My Car?

Before you book your Window Tint appointment, it is crucial to understand Alberta's vehicle equipment regulations. Here is the breakdown of what is legal, what isn't, and the risks involved.
The "Front Window" Tint Rule in Alberta
Illegal: Front Side Windows
According to Alberta law, no aftermarket tint is allowed on the driver’s side or front passenger’s side windows. Even a light 70% film is technically a violation.
What Window Tint IS Legal in Calgary?
- Rear Side Windows: Unlimited darkness (you can go 5% Limo tint).
- Rear Windshield: Unlimited darkness (provided you have two side mirrors).
- Front Windshield Strip: You are allowed a "glare strip" (eyebrow) on the top 15cm (6 inches) of the windshield. It cannot extend below the AS-1 line marked on the glass.
Why Do Calgarians Still Tint Front Windows?
Despite the law, you see tinted front windows everywhere in Calgary. Many drivers choose a lighter film (like 35% or 50% XPEL Prime XR) for heat rejection and UV protection.
The Risk: If you choose to tint your front windows, you risk a fine (typically $81) and may be ordered to remove the tint.
Our Calgary Tint Policy
At PPF Pros, we will install whatever film you request, but we require a waiver acknowledging that front-window tint is for "Show Car / Off-Road Use Only" to comply with liability standards. We recommend high-performance ceramic tint on the rear to maximize heat rejection legally.
