Why We Switched to XPEL
We didn't always use XPEL. When we started, we installed 3M Scotchgard Pro. It's a good film from a trusted brand. But "good" isn't what we're after.
After years of installations and customer feedback, we made the switch to XPEL Ultimate Plus. Here's what convinced us:
DAP Pattern Software
XPEL's Design Access Program has patterns for 95%+ of vehicles with edge-wrapping that 3M and SunTek patterns simply don't offer. Wrapped edges mean zero lifting and no dirt lines.
Calgary Winter Performance
At -30°C, some films become brittle. XPEL maintains flexibility from -40°C to +85°C. The self-healing works even in cold — scratch removal with warm water, not a heat gun.
Optical Clarity
On black, red, and dark metallic paints, film texture ("orange peel") is visible. XPEL Ultimate Plus is the clearest film on the market — virtually invisible on all colors.
Warranty Claims
We've processed warranty claims with multiple brands. XPEL's process is fastest — direct communication with the factory, no bureaucracy, claims resolved in days not weeks.
PPF Brand FAQs
Is XPEL PPF better than 3M?
In our professional experience, yes. We used to install 3M Scotchgard Pro. It's a good film, but XPEL Ultimate Plus offers better optical clarity (especially on dark colors), superior self-healing at lower temperatures (important for Calgary winters), and the DAP pattern software provides tighter fitment with wrapped edges that 3M patterns leave exposed. Both have 10-year warranties, but XPEL's claims process is faster.
What about SunTek PPF in Calgary?
SunTek Ultra is a solid mid-tier option. It offers good protection and value. However, for Calgary's extreme conditions (-40°C winters to +35°C summers), XPEL's proven cold-weather flexibility and larger pattern library give it the edge. SunTek is improving rapidly, but XPEL remains the premium choice for luxury vehicles.
Why did you switch from 3M to XPEL?
Three reasons: (1) XPEL DAP software allows us to wrap edges that 3M patterns leave exposed — this prevents lifting and dirt collection. (2) XPEL heals finer scratches at lower temperatures, crucial for Calgary winters. (3) XPEL is optically clearer, which matters on black, red, and metallic paints where film texture is more visible.
Is expensive PPF worth it over cheap brands?
Absolutely. Budget PPF (no-name brands) often yellows within 1-2 years, lifts at edges, and may not remove cleanly — potentially damaging your paint. Premium films like XPEL last 10+ years, maintain clarity, and remove without residue. For a $50,000+ vehicle, the difference between $1500 and $2500 in film is trivial compared to protecting your paint investment.
Do you install 3M or SunTek if requested?
We specialize in XPEL because we believe it's the best film for Calgary conditions. We're factory-certified XPEL installers with direct warranty support. If you specifically want 3M or SunTek, we can discuss options, but we'll always recommend what we stand behind — XPEL Ultimate Plus.
