The Legal Reality
Know the rules before you book.
Every day at PPF Pros, we get asked: "Can you match my front windows to the back?" The answer is yes, we can, but you need to understand the legal landscape in Calgary before we proceed.
Alberta Front Window Tint Law Explained
Alberta's Vehicle Equipment Regulation (Section 70) is strict. It prohibits the installation of any material that reduces light transmission on:
- The Windshield (except for a top glare strip).
- The Driver's side window.
- The Front Passenger's side window.
Important Note
Many dealerships will tell you "light tint is okay." This is incorrect. Even clear film reduces light transmission slightly. Technically, any aftermarket film on front windows is a violation, though enforcement varies by officer discretion.
Alberta Window Tint Legal vs Illegal Guide
| Window Location | Legal Status | Allowed Darkness (VLT) |
|---|---|---|
| Front Windshield (Full) | ILLEGAL | None (0%) |
| Front Windshield (Top Strip) | LEGAL | Any (Must be above AS-1 Line) |
| Front Side Windows | ILLEGAL | None (Must be factory glass) |
| Rear Side Windows | LEGAL | Any (5% to 70%) |
| Rear Back Glass | LEGAL | Any (Provided side mirrors exist) |
Why Calgary Drivers Tint Front Windows Anyway
Despite the law, thousands of Calgarians tint their front windows. Why take the risk?
The Pros
- Heat Rejection: Ceramic tint blocks burning heat.
- UV Protection: Blocks 99% of UV rays preventing skin damage.
- Aesthetics: Uniform look matches rear factory glass.
- Glass Safety: Holds shattered glass together in a crash.
The Cons
- Risk of Fine (~$81)
- Risk of "Defect Notice" (Must remove and prove it)
- Reduced night visibility if too dark (e.g., 5%)
- Potential liability in accidents
Calgary PPF Pros Tint Waiver Policy
At PPF Pros, we use XPEL Prime XR Plus. We are happy to install it on front windows for clients who prioritize heat rejection and UV safety, but we require a signed waiver acknowledging that the tint is intended for "Off-Road or Show Car Use Only."
We recommend choosing a lighter shade (like 50% or 35%) for front windows. This offers significant heat rejection without drawing immediate attention from law enforcement like a 5% Limo tint would.
Want to stay 100% Legal?
We can install a virtually clear 70% Ceramic Film. It blocks heat and UV rays but is almost invisible to the eye, keeping you cool without the ticket risk.
