To care for colored PPF in Calgary, wash with pH-neutral soap using the two-bucket method, never wipe dust off dry, and keep pressure washer nozzles at least 3 feet from film edges. Gloss film can be waxed or ceramic-coated, but satin/matte film needs matte-specific sealants only. Calgary's sun is a bonus: heat activates the self-healing polymers, so parking outside for an hour can erase light scratches and keep the wrap looking new for up to 10 years.
You've invested in a stunning Colored PPF wrap. Now, how do you keep it looking wet and glossy for the next 10 years? Maintenance is easier than paint, but there are specific rules.
Washing Colored PPF: The Two Bucket Method
Just like paint, swirls happen if you rub dirt into the surface. However, PPF swirls heal with heat! To minimize them anyway:
- Use a pH-neutral car soap (no heavy caustic cleaners).
- Use two buckets (one for rinse, one for soap) to keep your mitt clean.
- Never use a dry towel to wipe dust off. This is sandpaper.
Pressure Washing Rules for PPF in Calgary
Distance Matters
You can pressure wash PPF, but keep the nozzle 3 feet away from edges. High pressure (2000+ PSI) up close can slice through the film or force water underneath, lifting the wrap.
Waxing and Ceramic Coating Colored PPF
Gloss PPF: You can wax it! Use natural carnauba wax or synthetic sealants. Even better, apply a ceramic coating to make it super hydrophobic.
Satin/Matte PPF: WARNING. Do NOT use standard wax on matte film. It will add shine and create blotchy patches. You must use matte-specific sealants (like Chemical Guys Meticulous Matte or a premium matte-film sealant).
The Calgary Sun is Your Friend for Healing
Park outside! Heat activates the self-healing polymers. If you see light scratches, leaving the car in the sun for an hour will often make them disappear completely.
“Every spring I see colored wraps come in caked with road salt from a Calgary winter, and the owners are always nervous they've ruined the film. They almost never have. Salt sits on top of the PPF, not in it — a pH-neutral hand wash and a thorough rinse of the edges and lower panels clears it right off. The mistake I see most is people skipping washes in February because it's cold, then letting salt and grit dry on for weeks. I tell every client: a quick rinse every couple of weeks through winter beats one aggressive scrub in April. And in summer, our Chinook sun does half the maintenance for me — I've watched light wash marks heal out of a satin hood just sitting in the bay with the door open on a hot afternoon.”
