Quick Reference

Colored PPF in Calgary: Key Facts

The colour options, cost, durability, and warranty Calgary drivers ask about before booking.

What is colored PPF?
Colored PPF is a pigmented paint protection film that changes your vehicle's colour while delivering the same self-healing impact protection as clear PPF. Unlike a vinyl wrap, it armours the paint against rock chips and scratches in the same step as the colour change, and it remains fully removable.
Cost in Calgary
A full colored-PPF wrap in Calgary typically runs $6,000–$9,000+ depending on vehicle size, film, and finish, with partial coverage (hood, fenders, mirrors) available for less. It costs more than a vinyl wrap because you're getting colour and self-healing impact protection in a single film.
Colour & finish options
We install gloss, matte, satin, and colour-shift pigmented films — see STEK's fashion film line for the kind of factory-grade finishes this category has reached — so you get a custom look that paint can't easily match while keeping the factory finish protected underneath.
How long it takes
A full colored-PPF installation takes three to four days — the same window as a full-body clear wrap — because every panel is precisely cut and edges are wrapped, with trim and badges removed (disassembly) so the film tucks cleanly with no exposed seams.
Durability & self-healing
Quality colored PPF is built to last around 10 years and self-heals light swirls with heat — the same premium TPU construction as clear film, protecting against UV fade, rock chips, and Calgary road salt.
Warranty
Our colored PPF is backed by a 10-year manufacturer warranty against yellowing, cracking, peeling, and staining, plus our lifetime workmanship guarantee on the installation and edge adhesion.
Calgary climate fit
Colored PPF suits Calgary's gravel highways, June hail season, and salted winter roads — it absorbs rock-chip impacts and resists salt and UV while giving a custom colour, ideal for owners who want protection and style together.

Self-Healing Colour Film

The Swirls Close Themselves

The top coat is elastomeric: warm it and it returns to flat. That is why a colour change in film still looks new after a winter of automatic-wash swirls, and a respray does not.

  • Heat is the trigger

Sun on the panel, warm water from a hose, or a heat gun in our hands — the top coat relaxes back to flat and the swirl disappears.

  • It repeats, it does not run out

The healing is a property of the polymer, not a coating that wears off. It keeps working for the life of the film.

  • Light marks only — we will say so

Swirls and fine scratches close. A deep gouge that reaches the adhesive does not, and no film on the market claims otherwise.

Colored PPF vs Vinyl vs Paint

What You Actually Get for the Money

A vinyl wrap changes the colour. A respray changes the colour. Only one of the three changes the colour and stops a rock chip in the same step — here is the honest line-by-line.

Colored paint protection film compared with vinyl wrap and factory paint across thickness, protection, self-healing, finish, lifespan, and reversibility.

The trade is honest: colored PPF costs more than vinyl because you are buying an 8-mil self-healing film instead of a 3-mil decal. If you only want the colour for a season, vinyl is the cheaper answer — we'll tell you that in the consult.

How We Got Here

Three Ways to Change a Car's Colour

Each one solved the problem the previous one left behind. Knowing which is which is most of the decision.

  1. 01

    Respray

The original answer. Permanent, expensive, and it shows on a vehicle history report — a colour change this way costs you on resale before you have driven it.

  2. 02

    Vinyl wrap

The reversible answer. A 3-mil printed film gets you the colour for a couple of seasons, but it adds no impact protection and fades from the top down.

  3. 03

    Colored PPF

The current answer. Pigment inside an 8-mil self-healing film, so the colour change and the rock-chip protection are the same layer — and it still comes off.

    What we install

  • Your exact year, make, and trim pulled from the pattern database
  • Edges extended so the film wraps out of sight
  • Sensor and camera cutouts placed before the film touches the car

Zero Knives on Paint

Disassembly Install

We Take the Car Apart.

A colour change only looks factory if no original colour peeks out. Badges, handles, and trim come off so every edge wraps under the panel gap — then each pattern is computer-cut off the vehicle and hand-finished.

Hardware Off, Not Taped Around

Trim and badges removed so film tucks under every gap — the difference between a wrap and a respray look.

Digital Accuracy

Patterns accurate to 0.1mm around sensors, cameras, and badges.

Wrapped Edges Everywhere

No exposed seams — doors closed or open, the colour reads factory.

Cross-Light Inspection

Every panel checked under a sweeping LED bar before reassembly.

Film Construction

What the 8 Mils Are Made Of

Colored PPF is four bonded layers, not a coloured sticker. Each one has a job — and the colour lives in the thickest of them, which is why it cannot scuff off.

The outermost skin. Sheds water, road film, and bug residue so the colour stays readable between washes — and it is the layer that closes light swirls when it warms up.
Built into the film rather than sprayed on. They are what keeps a pigmented film from going chalky or yellow in Alberta sun — and what the 10-year warranty is written against.
The thick elastomeric layer that does the work: it deforms around a rock strike instead of transmitting it, and the colour lives inside it rather than being printed on top.
Pressure-sensitive, engineered to hold for a decade and still release cleanly. This is the layer that lets the wrap come off later with factory paint intact underneath.

Why the Install Matters

Same Film, Different Result

Two shops can quote the identical film and hand back very different cars. These are the three places that difference actually comes from.

  • Patterns we adjust, not just print

Stock plotter patterns leave short edges and stray sensor holes. Our installers extend the edges and close the holes on screen before a single panel is cut, so the film tucks instead of stopping at a visible line.

  • Installers trained by the manufacturer

Colour film is less forgiving than clear — a stretch mark shows as a light patch forever. Every installer here is manufacturer-certified, with thousands of panels behind them before they touch a colour change.

  • A ride home while we work

A colour change is a multi-day booking, not a wait-in-the-lobby job. Drop the car off and we cover your ride to work or home inside Calgary city limits.

A full colored-PPF wrap in Calgary runs $6,000–$9,000+ depending on vehicle size, film, and finish, with partial coverage (hood, fenders, mirrors) quoted for less. It costs more than a vinyl wrap because you're getting a colour change and 8-mil self-healing impact protection in a single film.

Colored PPF is 8-mil self-healing protective film with pigment in it; vinyl is a 3-mil cosmetic sticker with essentially no impact protection. Vinyl changes the colour and stops there — colored PPF changes the colour and also absorbs rock chips, heals light scratches with heat, and carries a 10-year warranty. Vinyl is cheaper; PPF is armour.

Five to seven business days for a full colour change. That window covers disassembly (badges, handles, and trim off so edges wrap cleanly), precise panel-by-panel installation, and a 24-hour cure and quality-control check before reassembly.

Standard packages wrap deep into the panel edges so no original colour shows when the doors are closed. Full jamb wrapping is available as a premium add-on for a complete, open-the-door colour transformation.

Yes, it's fully reversible — and no, professional removal doesn't damage healthy factory paint. The film actually protects the paint underneath it: remove the wrap in 5–10 years and the original finish comes out preserved, which is a genuine resale advantage over a repaint.

About 10 years, matching its 10-year manufacturer warranty against yellowing, cracking, peeling, and staining. The pigment is in the film itself — not a printed layer — so the colour doesn't fade out under Calgary's high-altitude UV the way budget vinyl does.

Gloss, satin/matte, and colour-shift finishes across a wide palette of pigmented films. If you want a factory-look colour change, gloss is closest; satin gives the stealth look without repainting; colour-shift films change hue with viewing angle. Bring your ideas — we'll show you physical samples on real panels.

Yes — it's the same 8-mil thermoplastic polyurethane construction as our clear film, with pigment added. It absorbs gravel impacts on Deerfoot and Stoney Trail, self-heals light swirls with heat, and shrugs off winter pickle-mix salt exactly like the clear version.

Easier than paint: hand wash with pH-neutral soap, skip automated brush washes, and let the sun do the swirl-healing. No waxing required — the top coat is hydrophobic. Satin finishes need matte-safe products only, which we'll walk you through at pickup.

For most owners, yes. A quality colour-change respray can cost as much or more, permanently alters the vehicle (which hurts resale), and offers zero impact protection. Colored PPF is reversible, protects the factory paint underneath, and carries a written 10-year warranty — a repaint carries neither.

It protects it. Because colored PPF is fully removable, you can sell the car wrapped, so the next owner gets the colour and the protected paint underneath, or have the film removed first to show the factory paint it has been protecting. A custom respray can't be undone that way.

Yes. The film is thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), which stays flexible in deep cold, so it doesn't crack on rock impacts the way vinyl can, and it resists road-salt chemicals such as magnesium chloride. Wash it regularly through the winter to keep the hydrophobic top coat working.

No. The pigment sits beneath the clear self-healing top coat, so light scratches and swirls are in the top coat, not the colour, which is why they heal with heat from warm sun or warm water.
