How to Prepare Your Car for PPF Installation: What to Do (and Not Do) Before Your Appointment

Clean vehicle ready for PPF installation at Calgary PPF Pros
TL;DR — Quick Answer

The main prep rule: no wax, sealant, or ceramic spray within 48 hours of your appointment. No brush car washes right before installation. Tell us about any recent paint work. Everything else — the wash, decontamination, clay bar, paint inspection — we handle at the shop. Showing up with a reasonably clean car is all you need to do.

You booked your PPF appointment — now what? Here is exactly what to do (and avoid) in the days before your installation to ensure perfect film adhesion and the best possible result. If you want a complete picture of the full process from drop-off to delivery, read our guide on what to expect during the PPF installation — it covers every step the shop goes through on your vehicle.

What to Do Before Your PPF Appointment

Wash your car (or let us do it — we include a wash in all installs)

Optional

A clean vehicle helps us work faster and ensures our inspection catches any paint issues. If you do wash it, use a pH-neutral car wash soap and avoid brush car washes. Hand wash is best. Or simply skip it — we handle decontamination as part of every install at no extra charge.

Note any existing chips or paint damage you want us to review

Recommended

Walk around your car before drop-off and mentally note any chips, scratches, or paint issues you want us to look at. We inspect every vehicle under professional shop lighting before installation and will discuss any findings with you — but having your own list helps ensure nothing is missed. If you are unsure whether your paint condition warrants paint correction first, our dedicated guide on whether paint correction is needed before PPF will help you decide.

Remove personal items from the car

Required

We need access to all panels, doors, and the interior near door edges. Empty your trunk, back seat area near doors, and any items hanging from mirrors or dashboards. You do not need to deep-clean the interior — just clear the immediate panel access areas.

Confirm your appointment 24 hours in advance

Recommended

A quick text or call confirmation the day before ensures your installation slot is held and any last-minute details are covered. Let us know if your plans have changed or if you have any specific questions about your package coverage.

Tell us about any recent body work or paint repairs

Required if applicable

If you have had any panel resprays, touch-up work, or body shop repairs in the last 30 days, let us know the date of the work. Fresh paint requires 30+ days to fully cure before PPF can be applied. This is not a deal-breaker — just something we schedule around.

One question that comes up frequently at drop-off: does your paint need correction before the film goes on? Our guide on whether you need paint correction before PPF explains which paint conditions make correction worthwhile and which ones you can skip — it's worth reading before your appointment if you're unsure.

What NOT to Do Before Your Appointment

Do NOT apply wax or any paint sealant in the 48 hours before

Wax and sealants create a slick barrier between paint and PPF adhesive. This directly compromises the film's bond strength and can cause lifting at edges within weeks. 48 hours is the minimum clearance — if you waxed recently, tell us at drop-off and we'll perform a proper decontamination.

Do NOT apply ceramic spray detailers or quick detailers

Ceramic spray products leave a thin ceramic residue on the paint surface. Like wax, this interferes with PPF adhesion. Many detail sprays are marketed as "safe under PPF" — but the safest approach is no spray products in the 48 hours before installation.

Do NOT use a commercial brush car wash

Automatic brush car washes create swirl marks and fine scratches on paint surfaces. Going through a brush wash right before PPF installation means we are laying film over freshly scratched paint — which will be visible through the clear film. If your car needs washing, hand wash or contactless touchless wash only.

Do NOT skip telling us about recent paint work

Applying PPF over paint that has not fully cured (under 30 days) causes bubbling, poor adhesion, and can damage the fresh paint when the film is eventually removed. If you had recent body work done, even minor touch-up by a dealership, let us know. We schedule around paint cure times — it is not a problem, just a timeline consideration.

Do NOT apply any aftermarket window tint right before PPF

If you are getting window tinting and PPF in the same week, schedule PPF first. Freshly applied window tint requires a curing period — aggressive decontamination during PPF prep could disturb newly installed tint film on the glass near the panels we are working on.

Day of Installation: What to Expect

Morning Drop-Off

Drop your vehicle off in the morning. Most installs take 4–8 hours depending on package size. We'll call or text when it's ready for pickup — typically same-day for Essentials and Standard, next day for Signature and full body.

Leave Enough Fuel

Our technicians may need to move the vehicle within the shop during installation. A quarter tank or more is sufficient — no need to fill up before drop-off.

Bring Your Questions

Drop-off is the best time to ask about coverage area decisions, add-ons like headlight PPF or mirror caps, and care instructions for the first 14 days of the curing period.

Keep Day Clear for Pickup

We'll call when your vehicle is ready. For larger packages, we may need until end of business day. Plan your transportation accordingly — we can arrange nearby drop-off if needed.

What We Handle at the Shop (Included in Every Install)

The Pros

  • Professional decontamination wash — removes road grime, rail dust, industrial fallout
  • Iron decontamination — iron fallout particle removal that bonding surfaces require
  • Clay bar treatment — final paint surface prep for perfect film adhesion
  • Paint inspection under professional shop lighting — we document pre-existing damage
  • Surface wipe-down with panel wipe solution — removes any residual contaminants
  • Chip review with you — we walk through any chips requiring touch-up before install
  • Post-install inspection — we verify every edge and panel before returning the vehicle

The Cons

  • We do not fix rust under PPF — rust must be addressed at a body shop first
  • We do not apply touch-up paint the same day as PPF (requires 30-day cure)
  • We do not install PPF on fresh paint under 30 days old

After Installation: The 14-Day Care Period

Once your film is on, the care you give it in the first two weeks determines how well the adhesive bonds long-term. If you notice anything unexpected during this window — small water bubbles, haze, or edge movement — our PPF troubleshooting guide for after installation will help you tell normal curing from something that needs attention.

Day 1–3

Keep the vehicle completely dry. No washing, no rain exposure if possible. The adhesive is still in its initial cure phase.

Day 4–7

Light misting from rain is OK. No hand washing yet. You may see small water bubbles under the film — this is normal and resolves as the film cures.

Day 8–14

Gentle hand wash with pH-neutral soap is acceptable. No high-pressure washers aimed directly at film edges. No wax or sealant products.

Day 14+

Full cure complete. Resume normal wash routine. Two-bucket method recommended. No brush car washes ever.

Water Bubbles Under the Film Are Normal

After installation, you may notice small water bubbles or haze under the film edges — especially in cooler weather. This is moisture from the installation process working its way out during the cure period. It is completely normal and resolves within the first 14 days. Do not attempt to push or pop these — they disappear on their own.
