The Winter Damage Left Behind
From October to March, Calgary roads are treated with road salt, abrasive sand, and gravel — and every kilometer on Deerfoot Trail or Stoney Trail puts that debris directly into your vehicle's paint, rockers, and undercarriage. By March, most vehicles have accumulated months of salt residue in areas that are impossible to wash off with a regular car wash.
Rock chips expose bare metal. Salt sits in those chips. In summer heat, that process accelerates: a small chip in fall becomes a rust spot by August. Rocker panels and the underbody — both low to the ground and constantly hit by spray — are where rust typically starts.
Why Spring Is the Right Window
Spring is the ideal time to protect your vehicle for two reasons. First, the damage from winter is recent and can be addressed before rust takes hold. Second, summer brings its own threats — UV fading, bird droppings (which etch clear coat in 48 hours), tree sap, and heavy pollen. A vehicle protected with PPF and undercoating in spring handles both seasons.
Installing PPF on a vehicle that already has rock chips or rust bubbling provides no benefit — the damage is sealed in. Spring, before rust spreads, is the window.
