Where these rules come from
Everything on this page traces to Alberta’s own published text rather than to another shop’s summary. Two points are worth reading carefully, because they are the ones most often got wrong online:
- Alberta sets no VLT percentage for the front glass. A film being “light enough” is not a defence — s.70(1) turns on whether aftermarket material is there at all.
- Alberta’s regulation grants no explicit visor-strip or AS-1-line exception. That allowance exists in a number of US states and gets repeated on Canadian tint pages, but it is not in Alta Reg 122/2009 — so we do not install darkening film on any part of a windshield.
- Vehicle Equipment Regulation, Alta Reg 122/2009 (ss. 70–72)
The regulation itself, published by the Alberta King’s Printer.
- Vehicle window tint exemption — Alberta.ca
The medical/physical-condition exemption and the 50% VLT condition attached to it.
- Vehicle standards — Alberta.ca
Provincial equipment standards that vehicles operated in Alberta must meet.
This page is a plain-language summary for Calgary drivers, not legal advice. If you are relying on an exemption, apply through Alberta.ca and carry the permit. Need the film side? See ceramic window tint pricing.

Technical
FAQ.
Frequently asked questions regarding specifications, installation protocols, and lifecycle maintenance.
01What is the legal window tint limit in Alberta?
There is no legal VLT percentage for the front windows, because Alberta does not regulate the fronts by darkness. Section 70(1) of the Vehicle Equipment Regulation prohibits installing any transparent, translucent or opaque material over the windshield or over a side window beside or forward of the driver. Rear side windows and the rear windshield have no darkness limit.
02Can you tint the front windows in Calgary?
No. Aftermarket tint on the driver and front passenger windows is prohibited in Alberta regardless of how light it is. Because the rule is about presence rather than percentage, even a film that looks clear can attract a ticket unless it is covered by an exemption permit.
03How dark can rear windows be tinted in Alberta?
Any darkness. Alberta sets no VLT limit for rear side windows or the rear windshield. Section 70(2) does require the vehicle to have compliant outside mirrors on both the left and right when the rear window glazing is covered.
04Can you put tint on the windshield in Alberta?
No. The windshield is named in the same prohibition as the front side windows. Alberta's regulation contains no explicit exception for a visor strip or a band above the AS-1 line, so we do not install darkening film on any part of the windshield.
05Is there a medical exemption for window tint in Alberta?
Yes. Albertans with a medical or physical condition requiring protection from sunlight can apply for an exemption permit. Where an exemption is granted, clear ultraviolet window film with a combined visible light transmittance of 50% or more may be installed. Apply through Alberta.ca before any film goes on.
06What is the fine for illegal window tint in Alberta?
Tint offences are written under the Traffic Safety Act and typically run in the low hundreds of dollars, and the ticket usually comes with an order to remove the film. The removal cost lands on you on top of the fine, which is why it is worth getting the coverage right the first time.
07Can you legally block heat on the front windows in Calgary?
Yes — with optically clear infrared-rejecting film rather than a shade. Clear IR film adds no darkness, so it does not run into the front-window prohibition, and it removes a large share of the solar heat load. Windshield and front-window clear film starts at $295.
08Does factory privacy glass count as illegal tint?
No. Factory privacy glass is tinted during manufacture rather than covered with aftermarket material, so it is outside the section 70 prohibition. It also appears only on rear glass, where Alberta sets no darkness limit in any case.
