Know
The Law

Getting pulled over for illegal window tint is expensive and embarrassing. The fine in Alberta can range from $150-$300, plus you'll be required to remove the tint. Understanding the legal limits before you tint saves money and hassle. Alberta's window tint laws are straightforward but often misunderstood. The key measurement is VLT — Visible Light Transmission. This is the percentage of light that must pass through your windows. Lower percentages mean darker tint. For front side windows (driver and passenger), Alberta requires minimum 35% VLT. This means at least 35% of light must pass through. Your tint can be darker on the rear side windows and back window — there's no specific limit for those. Your front windshield can only have tint on the top 15cm (about 6 inches), commonly called an eyebrow or visor strip. Here's where it gets tricky: factory tinted glass affects your final VLT. If your car came with 70% VLT glass from the factory, adding 35% tint film results in approximately 24.5% final VLT — which is illegal. We measure your factory glass before recommending tint to ensure the final result is legal. The good news? Modern ceramic and high-performance films can provide excellent heat rejection even at legal 35% VLT. You don't need to go illegal to stay cool. We'll help you choose the right tint that maximizes heat rejection while keeping you compliant with Alberta law.

Technical
FAQ.

Frequently asked questions regarding specifications, installation protocols, and lifecycle maintenance.

01What is the legal tint limit in Alberta?

Alberta requires minimum 35% VLT (Visible Light Transmission) for front side windows. This means at least 35% of light must pass through the window. Rear windows have no specific limit. Windshield tint is limited to the top 15cm (eyebrow strip only).

02How do police check if tint is legal?

Police use a tint meter that measures VLT by shining a light through your window. If the reading shows less than 35% light transmission on front windows, you're in violation. Some officers can also estimate by eye, leading to tickets that require you to prove compliance.

03Can I get a ticket for rear window tint?

Generally no for passenger vehicles, as Alberta law doesn't specify a limit for rear windows. However, extremely dark tint on all windows could potentially be cited under general visibility laws if it impairs the driver's ability to see. We recommend reasonable darkness on rears.

04What happens if I get caught with illegal tint?

You'll receive a ticket with a fine typically between $150-$300. You'll also be required to remove the illegal tint and may need to provide proof of removal. In some cases, you must get your vehicle re-inspected. It's cheaper to get legal tint from the start.

05Does factory tinted glass count toward the limit?

Yes, absolutely. This is the most common cause of illegal tint. If your car has 70% VLT factory glass and you add 35% tint film, your final VLT is approximately 24.5% — which is illegal. We always measure factory glass before recommending tint darkness.

Incredible quality. The film is invisible and the edges are wrapped perfectly. Already saved me from two rock chips on Deerfoot. Worth every penny.
